Experimental size-selective harvesting affects behavioral types of a social fish

2019

In most fisheries, larger fish experience substantially higher mortality than smaller fish. Body length, life history, and behavioral traits are often correlated, such that fisheries-induced changes in size or life history can also alter behavioral traits. However, empirical evidence regarding how size-selective harvesting alters the evolution of behavioral traits in exploited stocks is scarce. We used experimental lines of Zebrafish Danio rerio that were exposed to positively size-selective, negatively size-selective, or random harvest over five generations. Our aim was to investigate whether simulated fishing changed the mean personality of the surviving females five generations after ini…

Overview of the History of the Cranial Nerves: From Galen to the 21st Century

2018

Throughout history the description and classification of the cranial nerves has been linked to the development and characteristics of anatomy and the role that it played as a tool in providing rationality to medicine, together with social, cultural, religious, and philosophical factors. Anatomists were interested in the cranial nerves, but they disagreed on their number and their paths. We can divide the history of the cranial nerves into three different periods: the first, early or macroscopic period; the second or microscopic period; and the third period or ontogenesis and genoarchitecture. The main aim of this article is to show how the description and knowledge of the cranial nerves wer…

Extensions and intentions in the rough set theory

1998

Abstract The approach to rough set theory proposed in this paper is based on the mutual correspondence of the concepts of extension and intension. It is different from the well-known approaches in the literature in that the upper approximations and the lower approximations of ‘unknown’ sets are considered as certain families of ‘known’ sets. This approach makes it possible to formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of operations on rough sets, which are analogous to classical operations on sets. The basic results presented in this paper, based on certain ideas of the second author, were formulated by the first author in his doctoral dissertation prepared under the su…

Grounded Analytic Research: Building Theory from a Body of Research

2012

Track II: Recent Developments in Inductive Research Methods; International audience; In this paper, we present Grounded Analytic Research (GAR) as a method to build theory by synthesizing empirical findings from multiple studies that has been conducted by a single researcher. GAR incorporates concepts from grounded theory, analytic research and systematic literature review. The method was applied in a doctoral dissertation work to build the theoretical concept of Demand Sustainability of public Internet access in the context of bridging the digital divide. We describe GAR and compare it with existing theory building methods that are similar to it in epistemology and ontology.
